Postpartum hypothyroidism is a very common condition involving females immediately after pregnancy that’s brought on by an autoimmune disease known as lymphocytic thyroiditis. It affects around 5% of women soon after giving birth and is suspected to be the fundamental cause of postpartum depression.

In lymphocytic thyroiditis, the thyroid glands becomes inflamed caused by the infiltration of a white blood cell referred to as lymphocyte. It is thought to be a consequence of the modification of the immune system necessary for having a baby. It has an initial hyperthyroid phase wherein the thyroid glands creates too much quantities of thyroid hormones, resulting in a radical surge in the metabolism rate. This will result in diarrhea, rapid pulse, feeling overheated, rapid weight loss, difficulty in sleeping, and anxiety.

Following the preliminary hyperthyroid stage, the thyroid either comes back to its normal status or it goes into hypothyroid phase. In this status, the thyroid glands become underactive, making inadequate thyroid hormones that causes an abnormal decrease in the metabolism rate. It leads to low energy among new mothers, wherein they’ll be sleeping a minimum of 14 hours and awaken unrefreshed. This also makes the new mother acquire more pounds even though she is following a thorough diet and workout plan. This is because her body cannot correctly process the excessive calories a result of the changes in metabolic process. These symptoms can seriously affect the psyche of the new mother, possibly causing a postpartum depressed state characterized by anxiety, feelings of sadness, a sense of hopelessness, mood swings, feelings of guilt and worthlessness, disturbance in appetite, and lack of interest in the baby.

Pregnant women who tested positive for antithyroid antibodies have between 33% to 50% probability of acquiring lymphocytic thyroiditis after giving birth to the baby. Additionally, some researchers have found that the presence of these antibodies makes a pregnant woman three times more likely to acquire postpartum depression. This thyroid issue following maternity can be short-term, lasting for up to six months to a year. However, about one in five of women will acquire long term hypothyroidism that needs lifetime hormone remedy. The reason being the thyroid glands were too impaired as a result of hormonal imbalance or because the maternity set off an underlying condition of autoimmune disease.

Contrary to public opinion, being sexually active isn’t the only event that will increase women’s probability of acquiring bacterial vaginosis. Some studies indicate that 20% of women that are pregnant develop bacterial vaginosis once or twice throughout their motherhood. For this reason if you’re considering being pregnant or if you are as of now expecting, you may need to learn about about bacterial vaginosis. Here are a few of the things that you should realize.

Having a baby is not going to imply that you’re going to have bacterial vaginosis. It just so happens that ladies that are within a child bearing age group and some women who are fundamentally knocked up has a greater bacterial vaginosis incidence percentage rate. This doesn’t also mean that being pregnant can cause bacterial vaginosis.

However, scientific tests done in 2002 have definitely proven the point that bacterial vaginosis is usually connected to newborns developing low birth bodyweight and premature rupture of the membranes which ultimately results in preterm birth. Preterm birth usually means having a baby earlier than plotted. So far, clinical professionals and other experts are still figuring their accurate relationship. It is more probably that bacterial vaginosis is among the the signs of preterm labor or low birth weight.

When considering the management of bacterial vaginosis, expectant women are given decreased doses of metronidazole so that a fetus is not exposed to the drug that much. Up to now, no research project has been able to provide eveidence that metronidazole can actually bring out teratogenic outcomes to the newborn. However, you should remember that it is safer to be on the safe side of a treatment method rather than having to repent it in the future. This is also why skin medications which is used to get rid of the itching caused by bacterial vaginosis might be more advisable compared to the direct remedy for the illness.

This is exactly why douching is not really suggested during pregnant state. Douching is considered to be one of the risk factors of bacterial vaginosis. If you are pregnant, it’s better if you really do not fragrant soaps to wash your vagina. Fragrant soaps can lead to a microbial imbalance in your genitals making it the ideal habitat for the strain of bacterium that causes bacterial vaginosis.

As if it’s not enough that expecting mothers will need to go through inconvenient and occasionally embarrassing pregnancy signs or symptoms, they also have to worry about back pains. Nevertheless, just like the other pregnancy signs and symptoms, back pain is certainly controllable without mothers needing to use pain killers harmful for their baby. Below are great tips to control back pain while pregnant.

Breathing workouts needs to be carried out if mothers are starting to feel like a back pain is impending or if it’s currently taking place. Besides providing better flow and respiration, breathing workouts also provide soothing and comforting effects in the body that lets parents forget the back pain. This can be achieved by pursing the mouth then breathing in and exhaling through the nose while making sure that the exhale is longer than the take a breath.

Doing diversionary routines likewise helps mothers neglect the back pain that’s brought on by their pregnancy. These kinds of diversionary activities consist of reading books and preparing activities that everyone can do after the pregnancy. Watching fun filled and happy ending movies and shows help brighten the feeling of the child which brightens up the feelings of the baby.

Mothers also needs to try out different positions when it comes to lying down or sitting up to find the one which they find the most comfortable in and to find the one that makes the least amount of back pain. This method is proven to be effective by many. However, mothers should not expect that the most secure and painless position will be the best position for them throughout their pregnancy. It also varies and changes from week to week or from month to month.

Applying liniments can also be the best way to lessen the amount of back pain caused by a pregnancy. Although it doesn’t have a direct therapeutic effect, it produces a kind of ‘placebo effect’ in some mothers. Also, there are some mothers who find the odor of liniments to be extra soothing and comforting thus diverting their minds from back pain as a result of pregnancy.

One matter that any pregnant woman could be really concerned about is vomiting during pregnancy - also known as the ‘morning sickness’. Many believe that there is a connection between morning sickness and miscarriage and assume that a lack of morning sickness is a bad sign. This matter should also be considered so that women may be well informed of what factors may signify complications for pregnancy.

It is still advised that whatever the situation or the concern may be, a pregnant woman should see a doctor to have a medical opinion with reference to morning sickness, miscarriage, and the like. A medical opinion from the specialist isimperative especially if it’s on the subject of morning sickness and miscarriage.

Let’s take a closer look at the connection between morning sickness and miscarriage, if there is one, so that you can be prepared for a conversation with your doctor if necessary.

It is good to understand why morning sickness happens especially when studying the connection between morning sickness and miscarriage. The exact answer may not be known to doctors but a lot of people believe that the mother’s body is eliminating all toxins and other wastes that the developing fetus cannot handle. This is one reason for a connection between morning sickness and miscarriage – if a woman does not have morning sickness, it may be assumed that the fetus is not protected as it should be.

When a woman is pregnant, her levels of estrogen increases and her sense of smell become more sensitive. Both of thesethings can cause nausea and upset stomach which may lead to vomiting. Obviously these things would rule out the connection between morning sickness and miscarriage as they have nothing to do with the protection of the fetus.

Does morning sickness and miscarriage really have a connection? We understood that if a woman is experiencing vomiting, she is somehow protecting her little from unwanted elements in her body. However, not vomiting or experiencing nausea is not, on its own, a bad indicator either.

It has been evident that there are many women who have gone through pregnancy that has never experienced morning sickness, they might have had a slight nausea and indigestion but had perfectly healthy babies nonetheless. Some women have had severe nausea and morning sickness and have unfortunately lost the pregnancy as well. It is absolutely impossible todefinitively state the connection between a lack of morning sickness andmiscarriage or to assume that no sickness always means a problem.

Therefore, like initially had been stated, it is crucial for a pregnant woman to seek regular prenatal medical advice and exams regardless of her current condition. The possibility of lacking morning sickness and miscarriage having a connection is apparent, but a doctor is the one who can directly monitor the woman’s pregnancy in a healthy and more accurate way.

Many women love to be pregnant and are willing to forego those problems connected with it such as morning sickness. There is one good association between pregnancy and morning sickness; women who are not having morning sickness are more probable of having miscarried or born a child with birth defects.

Understanding that morning sickness is a good thing doesn’t make it any easier to bear. Some cases of morning sickness are mild and just uncomfortable, whereas other cases of pregnancy and morning sickness mean vomiting to the point of dehydration and other complications. Even with it being a good sign during pregnancy, it should still be addressed.

Hence in general, how do you address pregnancy and morning sickness? Consider a few real tips in dealing with this unvarying dilemma.

Allegedly, one cause of pregnancy and morning sickness is that the body is trying to guard the fetus from certain elements the mother has ingested which could possibly harm the fetus. Typically, these are natural toxins enclosed in various foods which the mother’s body can digest naturally but might be difficult to fend off by a developing fetus.

To assist the digestive process, instead of having three heavy meals, it is good to eat six small meals per day. In this way, the mother’s body can easily digest those elements before it reached the fetus. This may not be able to stop all issues in pregnancy and morning sickness but this can greatly help in decreasing pains or complications.

It’s also good to avoid an empty stomach as this can upset the entire digestive process. To deal with pregnancy and morning sickness be mindful of how you eat and how much. Have a small snack before bedtime so your stomach isn’t empty overnight.

In view of the fact that pregnancy and morning sickness can be a good thing, consider those ways of treating the symptoms first instead of trying to make it go away entirely. This includes taking things that are safe during the period of pregnancy which will significantly help with indigestion and vomiting.

Ginger is awfully good for resolving an upset stomach. Dry toast and tea can also patch up the stomach. Bananas and applesauce will definitely provide you the nourishment you need while undergoing pregnancy and morning sickness and these are also healthy for the baby. They are also uncomplicated to absorb that’s why they won’t worsen the trouble.

You also need to think about keeping yourself hydrated during this time. Drink plenty of water to replenish fluids. Never let yourself get thirsty as this is a sign that you’re already dehydrated. Avoid caffeine as much as possible but try juice and natural remedies for dehydration. While pregnancy and morning sickness may go hand in hand and it may be difficult to deal with this issue, remember that it’s only temporary. If you take care of yourself you’ll soon have a healthy and happy baby, and that dreaded morning sickness will be a distant memory.

You are not in this alone. You are part of a team: you and your newborn. However, at the beginning, you may not feel that either of you are on the same team. You may not be in sync. This is not unusual. In fact, it is quite normal to feel at bit at odds or off beat. The beginning of most ventures is a time of adjustment. Neither you or the baby are certain of what you are exactly doing or where you are going. What you need to realize this is a process of exploration.

You can be certain of 2 things. Your baby knows he is hungry and wants to eat. You know you want to feed your baby. The two of you have to meet on this common ground. The question is how? The answer is to make sure the feeding process is baby and not mother led.

Baby led breast feeding is directed towards feeding the baby when he or she exhibits hunger signals. You do not try to make the baby’s needs fit into your schedule. You do not set up some mandatory feeding plan from which you never veer. Instead, you arrange your schedule to adapt to your baby’s needs. This does not mean you cannot accommodate your own needs and plans. You will, however, need to shift your plans and your baby’s needs to create a harmonious compromise in line with the demands of hunger. In this way, you have less problems with milk production. Therefore, your baby will receive enough nutrition and the milk train will keep on rolling.

The process of baby-led feeding is particularly important during the first 48 hours. During this period, feeding gives you time and help you to learn your baby’s feeding cues. These are crucial of you want to create a baby-mommy team. The first priority, therefore, is to recognize during the first weeks the signs of hunger your baby will exhibit. Become aware of specific indications of his or her need. These include the following signs:

Wriggling
The baby will move his or her legs and arms around.

Head movements
The infant moves the head from side-to-side searching for you and your breast. This can take place even though he or she is already on your lap or in your arms.

Fingers
The child will place the fingers in the mouth.

If you see your baby exhibiting any of these early signs, pick him or her up and place to your breast. If you fail to recognize the indications of hunger, the baby will become more and more distressed. As a result, specific stress cues of hunger will become obvious. Your baby may

Fuss
Your baby will fuss about while making squeaking sounds.

Wriggle
The wriggling will increase.

Cries
The infant will start to utter sharp, short cries.

Vocalization
The cries will increase in volume, becoming louder. The baby will scream until he or she is red in the face.

The signs are not always clearly seen. You can miss or ignore them if you are not near by. You have to be close to your child to see the indications of hunger. If you miss the cues, you throw the pattern of milk production, delivery and expressing off. As a result, you may decrease overall milk production.

Being aware of your baby’s needs helps you to establish a rhythm in your feeding. You develop a pattern – part of a dance. Think of it as a performing art in which you and the baby operate as one unit. Become aware of the other’s needs and note the changes as he or she develops. In the initial stages, after colostrum and as the baby reaches its birth rate, he or she will develop a natural feeding and sleeping pattern. As the infant grows and continues to feed, the choreography of the dance will eventually alter.

The baby will develop feeding clusters. After sleeping he or she will awake full of energy and ready to breast feed. Sometimes the baby will require several cluster feedings. These power feedings are frequently in the evenings and afternoons. You and your body will adjust. You will become aware of the other’s needs and your need to relieve your breast of milk. Becoming in tune with your baby’s requirements and yours will help you become a baby team.

What also helps form you and baby into a team is the onset of the moth-baby dialogue. Rarely does a mother simply sit and feed her infant. A pattern of physical and emotional bonding is occurring during breast feeding. It is the perfect time for mother and child to establish a tie. You will do so, hopefully unconsciously, by stroking the infant. You will touch and stroke his or her fine soft hair. You will find yourself turning out the rest of your world, slowing down and focusing only on this moment in time.

While holding your baby to your breast, stop and consider the position. Look down at this small bundle of humanity. How are you holding him or her? Is she or he wriggling in your arms in an attempt to get closer? Is the baby burrowing further into your body as he or she latches onto your breast?

Now, listen to your infant’s breath. Hear the rhythm he or she makes as they gulp and swallow. Feel the strong tug of their tiny mouth on your firm breast. Enjoy the sensation as the milk flows naturally from your body. Luxuriate in the touch of the baby’s small hands as they curve against your body and the snuggling and wriggling of this little body against yours.

Besides the signs your baby provides, you have to also listen to your indications. While you may love feeding your baby, there are times when you need to escape. Sometimes, due to circumstance, you have to leave your child during breast feeding times. Often, you are working or taking care of other affairs. At other times, you just need time to yourself. This is not unnatural. It is also not a crime, a sin or abandonment. You can also turn your break from breast feeding into an opportunity. This will allow your partner some time alone with the baby. He or she can bond with the infant by feeding him or her. However, if you want to be away from your child during breast feeding times and still ensure that he or she is breast fed, you need to provide the necessary nourishment.

In order to do this, you will have to express or pump your breast milk. For this, you will require a breast pump in some shape or form. It can be electric, hand or foot operated. The breast pump should be something you can operate freely and easily without any pain to your breasts.

The pumping process also requires containers for storage and equipment for their sterilization. All are available online or at various specialty shops or major outlets. Be sure to purchase at least 3 to 4 bottles with nipples as well as several freezer bags. These should be sufficient to allow you to pump and store milk. You may also want to purchase some stickers or labels. You can, therefore date them. You can also label them with the contents thus preventing mistaken use.

You can pump milk when you have excess. You can also remove some prior to and following a feeding. In fact, the best time to extract milk if after you have fed the infant. If you feel full at any time, get out the pump and remove the milk. The pumping action will stimulate further milk production. In fact, if you are away for longer than 3 or 4 hours, you will need to use the pump. In doing so, you will prevent engorgement. Be sure to remove the equivalent of at least 3 to 4 ounces per feeding time.

As you continue to breast feed, you will establish a rhythm. Both you and your child will fall into the optimum position and comfort level for the dance. The desire to meet the baby’s requirements, the action of placing your baby to your breast, your awareness of the flow and tingle of the milk ejection reflex, followed by a sense of satisfaction and even completeness as your infant sucks at your breast is part of your new steps as a mother. By recognizing and responding to the hunger cues of your baby and through taking your own needs into consideration, both you and your infant will soon be able to develop a compatible bond. By the time the parents get home, they are either too tired or too stressed to pay much attention to what is going on with their own children. Unfortunately, emotional stress is children can get worst over time and when these children could no longer stand the stress, they either retreats to their own make believe worlds or they become aggressive. If you are a young parent, you need to learn how to deal with emotional stress in children. Even if you are tired and stressed out yourself, you should never ignore your children.

Get To Know Your Child Better

Emotional stress in children often manifests itself in various forms. Some children become sickly when they are stressed out. Studies show that many children who are emotionally stressed suffer from fever and flu more frequently than those children who are not under a lot of stress. If your child is sick most of the time, you should try to delve into the root cause of the problem instead of merely treating the symptoms. Talk to your child and get to know him or her better. If you can afford it, take your child on a vacation to break the stressful routine that she or he is in. According to experts, taking your child on a short vacation is a good form of emotional stress relief both for parents and children.

While other children become sickly when they are stressed out, some children manifest their symptoms in other ways. Some children become unruly and attention deficient when they are emotionally stressed out. When your otherwise mild tempered little girl or boy starts to raise a lot of noise and ruckus in the house, you should pay attention to her or him. According to experts, when not addressed properly, emotional stress in children can lead to trauma that may affect the mental and emotional stability of children. To protect your child from possible traumatic experiences, listen to what your child is not saying. Learn to recognize his or her body languages and respond to his or her silent pleas for help.

Get Help From Professionals

Emotional stress in children can be quite devastating to young parents. If you feel that you are unable to cope with emotional stress in your children, you should seek professional help. Find a therapist who can help you and your children deal with emotional stress.

Even if the pregnancy is planned some women feel emotional and ambivalent especially during the first few months of conception. First time mothers are especially prone to emotional stress and pregnancy blues simply because they do not know what to expect during this period. Changes in hormones coupled with fatigue, uncertainty and tension often contribute to emotional stress during pregnancy and many women are not ready to deal with all the changes. Luckily, women who planned their pregnancy together with their partner often get most of the physical and emotional support that they need from their partners so they eventually settle in and learn to enjoy the new experience.

On the other hand, women who have unplanned pregnancies can have some really rough times especially during the first and the 3rd trimester of pregnancy. Emotional stress and pregnancy commonly go together during this period as hormonal changes affect the woman’s mood. Moreover, since the pregnancy is unplanned, the woman may not get all the support that she needs from the father of the baby. This situation can lead to a lot of emotional stress and pregnancy blues that often prevent the woman to appreciate her pregnancy. As it is, coping with emotional stress may be a bit more difficult for these women at this point. Fortunately, most women eventually cope with emotional stress and pregnancy with the help of family members and friends.

Coping With Changes And Preparing For Birth

Pregnant women need to learn how to cope with the many changes in their bodies. They need to understand what is going on during their pregnancy to avoid a lot of emotional stress during pregnancy. Reading books about emotional stress and pregnancy can help women cope with the many changes in their bodies. There are a lot of books available in the libraries and bookstores about emotional stress and pregnancy. Pregnant women should read at least one of these books and educate themselves about what is going on inside their bodies.

Getting advice and care from professionals is also very important especially when the woman has pre-existing ailments that may affect her pregnancy. Experts recommend that pregnant women should see a doctor or a midwife all through the duration of the pregnancy. During the first and second trimester, pregnant women should see their doctors or midwives at least once a month for prenatal check-ups. During the third trimester, they should see go for prenatal check-ups fortnightly or once a week depending on the advice of their doctors or midwives.

Children who are diagnosed with sleep apnea can be hyperactive and aggressive. They can also suffer greatly in their studies. Sometimes they may sleep different than normal. They may also wet the bed. During the daytime hours, some of them will breathe through their mouth instead of breathing through their nose.

Snoring loudly, snorting, gasping for air and temporary stoppage in breathing all are signs of sleep apnea. Basically, their signs and symptoms are parallel with what adults have.

Sleep Apnea in Children

Even with this, physicians cannot always detect this sleep disorder in children. They figure because most are hyperactive anyway, that it’s not a big deal.

There are some things that you can do to find out if your child actually has sleep apnea:

Check with your child’s pediatrician and let them know what’s going on.

Consult with an ENT (ear, nose and throat) specialist.

Consult with a pulmonologist (lung specialist) that specializes in children.

Psychiatrists, psychologists and other medical providers can also help with a diagnosis.

Sleep Apnea in Children

If you have health insurance, make sure to consult with them first to see if you need referrals for certain medical providers.

If there is further testing to be done, check to see if the physicians are board certified to treat children with sleep apnea. Don’t be afraid to ask for their credentials. Besides, this is your child’s health that you’re dealing with. With them, any diagnosis can require delicate care and attentiveness.

Sleep Apnea in Children

The physician will also need to find out if they are taking medications and if the child is allergic to anything. Also, advise them of any issues with their behavior and development. In addition to that, provide them with information on their nightly sleep patterns and if they take naps.

The child may have to take a sleep study or polysomnogram (PSG) to determine the severity of their sleep apnea. There are other tests that are given to make a determination. They include:

An electroencephalogram (EEG), which is use to measure the waves of the brain;

An electroculogram (EOG), which is used for chin and eye measurements;

Both of these tests are used to check on the different sleep stages;

An electrocardiogram (EKG), which is used for rhythm and heart rate measurements;

Tests using chest bands for breathing movement measurements;

Tests using more monitors for levels of oxygen and levels carbon dioxide in the child’s blood.

Sleep Apnea in Children

The majority of the sleep studies for children require an overnight stay. There are not a lot of medical facilities that specialize in sleep apnea for children. Even with that, the ones that are used for adults will utilize them to test children as well.

Check the facility to find out if they work with children that may have this sleep disorder. As with adults, check various organizations and groups to find a qualified sleep specialist.

Also, as with adults, if sleep apnea goes untreated in children, they can also experience serious health issues down the road. Children can also get worse with their behavioral patterns and academics in school if they are not treated in a timely manner. Don’t take for granted that they may just be going through a difficult time when it could very well be sleep apnea.

The new-born baby is exercising many of its muscles in the very act of feeding at the breast. Crying in itself is a very important exercise for the lungs and the diaphragm and plays a very important part in the development of the baby’s musculature.

You have just to watch a baby feeding or crying to confirm these facts, In fact it can be said that the baby sometimes seems to cry just for the exercise the act involves. If therefore the baby seems to be crying naturally without any real cause of discomfort, you should not be in a hurry to stop its crying.

Every tendency and activity of a child is natural and instinctive and rather than trying to stop such activity without thinking, it would be advisable to direct or modify such activity after careful consideration.

Our knowledge of the general principles and other information regarding the methods and manner of bringing up a child cannot be applied indiscriminately and uniformly to all children. For instance, a child that is normal in its health and in other ways may not cry, or may do so very infreque

ntly. In such a case if the mother tries by various means to make it cry in the belief that ‘crying strengthens the lungs’ she would in fact be harming the child.

In babies case, play and exercise cannot really be distinguished. Play exercises a variety of muscles, and the baby may enjoy exercising its muscles. In point of fact every kind of activity in playing involves movement of the muscles of the arms, lags and other parts of the body. Hence for a child even a play is actually a form of exercise.

As the child grows and develops, there is a gradual accumulation of energy in the body of the child. When the energy accumulates in abundance it demands an outlet and the child naturally turns to play. As the child-psychologists believe play is the catharsis of the surplus energies of the child.

In child’s growth judicious blend of sleep, play and exercise makes as great a contributions proper nutrition arid other facts may do. It was not for nothing that shakespeare said: “Sleep is the chief nourisher for the life’s feast.” Lack of sleep, play or exercise can ruin all the ideal dietary effects on the child’s body no matter what you feed him. These four vital factors: proper food, adequate sleep, exercise and play make a lot of difference in the children’s health as their body is more receptive and rather untrained.

While paying attention to these vital factors the natural query that springs is as to how to determine what is needed for the growing child. That brings in focus the various stages of development.
