Rosacea is often a persistent skin problem that typically strikes Caucasians and fair skinned men and women, thus earning it a nickname of “the curse of the Celts”. It commonly impacts the central part with the face, within the nose, cheeks, forehead, and chin. Its major symptoms comprise of facial erythema or blushing from the skin, inflamed papules and pustules, widespread flushing with chronic redness, blood vessel lines, and in its severe stage, the thickening of the skin in the nose causing it to have a knobby physical appearance.

Most women are far more prone to have this problem than men despite the fact that it can be far more serious for the latter. The onset of this condition normally happens during 30-40 years old. Within the U.S. alone, it can be estimated that 14 million men and women has rosacea. Although it is mostly a simple issue, its moderate and severe stage may possibly result in drastic changes towards the physical appearance with the affected person, therefore causing embarrassment and social discomfort. While the cause of rosacea is yet to be learned, its symptoms are treatable.

There are 2 ways to treat rosacea. The first way is through self-help where the impacted person tries to take care of the effects of rosacea via his/her own efforts. Using self-help, anyone may avoid the factors that trigger flushing so that you can prevent the issue from aggravating, in particular alcohol, strenuous exercises, sunlight, vasodilating drugs, warm water baths, astringents and so on. Anyone can also use cosmetic items like anti-redness cream which could reduce facial erythema.

Meanwhile folks impacted with mild stages of rosacea could also use topical treatment options that happen to be used directly to the skin. Some in the topical treatment options that may be utilized are azelaic acid that reduces pigment formation, sodium sulfacetamide thatreduce redness, and topical metronidazole which also acts as antibacterial and antiprotozoal .

Oral treatment is also an alternative to deal with rosacea, specifically when it causes papules and pustules or when there is eye involvement. Antibiotics and isotretinoin are employed in oral therapy.

An additional remedy that might be used for rosacea is laser surgery. It really is normally accomplished for cases that are in severe stages. Laser surgery can be a non-invasive procedure that targets lesions inside inflamed blood vessels. Laser surgery can be employed to handle the redness from the skin, telangiectasias, and rhinophyma.

Hypothyroidism is generally a lifetime disease that needs ongoing treatment using synthetic levothyroxine. The treatment assures that you have enough levels of thyroid hormones. If the condition is left untreated the low levels of thyroid hormone will hurt the body, causing sluggish overall metabolism. Here are some of the effects of an unattended case of hypothyroidism.

The thyroid hormones are necessary in the operation of the heart as they help in controlling the heart rate and output. Thyroid hormones relaxes the heart muscles making sure that it is qualified to pump correct volume of blood throughout the body. Low levels of thyroid hormones is perilous to the heart as it could slow down the heart rate considerably. Consequently, the blood vessel walls become stiff and blood pressure rises, and can result in hypertension.

For the brain, hypothyroidism can lead to depression because of its incapacitating effects on those afflicted with it. Left with no treatment, it may also trigger the deterioration of the brain and lead to dementia, wherein the individual has a difficult time focusing and remembering past events.

The reproduction system is additionally vulnerable when hypothyroidism is left with no treatment. For women, it can impact the ovulation process bringing about irregular menstrual cycles. Pregnant women with hypothyroidism confronts a huge risk of miscarriage. It can also compromise the development of the fetus. Therefore, it may lead to birth defects on children born to mothers with hypothyroidism and result in their stunted developmental growth.

The worse case scenario for an untreated case of hypothyroidism is a serious, life-threatening condition called myxedema coma. The symptoms of this condition are fluid formation, seizures, slow heart rate, urine retention, delirium, stupor, constipation, decreasing functioning of the lung, hypothermia, and eventually coma. It is a rare state that can be activated by experiencing serious stress such as infections, extreme cold, trauma, stroke, heart failure, and surgery. Other medications such as amiodarone, lithium, tranquilizers, and phenothiazines, as well as continuous iodine exposure can also result in this condition. Myxedema coma is an emergency state and immediate medical treatment is extremely necessary. Although it is a unusual state, fatality rates are very high, ranging from 30% to 60% with older patients.

Postpartum hypothyroidism is a very common condition involving females immediately after pregnancy that’s brought on by an autoimmune disease known as lymphocytic thyroiditis. It affects around 5% of women soon after giving birth and is suspected to be the fundamental cause of postpartum depression.

In lymphocytic thyroiditis, the thyroid glands becomes inflamed caused by the infiltration of a white blood cell referred to as lymphocyte. It is thought to be a consequence of the modification of the immune system necessary for having a baby. It has an initial hyperthyroid phase wherein the thyroid glands creates too much quantities of thyroid hormones, resulting in a radical surge in the metabolism rate. This will result in diarrhea, rapid pulse, feeling overheated, rapid weight loss, difficulty in sleeping, and anxiety.

Following the preliminary hyperthyroid stage, the thyroid either comes back to its normal status or it goes into hypothyroid phase. In this status, the thyroid glands become underactive, making inadequate thyroid hormones that causes an abnormal decrease in the metabolism rate. It leads to low energy among new mothers, wherein they’ll be sleeping a minimum of 14 hours and awaken unrefreshed. This also makes the new mother acquire more pounds even though she is following a thorough diet and workout plan. This is because her body cannot correctly process the excessive calories a result of the changes in metabolic process. These symptoms can seriously affect the psyche of the new mother, possibly causing a postpartum depressed state characterized by anxiety, feelings of sadness, a sense of hopelessness, mood swings, feelings of guilt and worthlessness, disturbance in appetite, and lack of interest in the baby.

Pregnant women who tested positive for antithyroid antibodies have between 33% to 50% probability of acquiring lymphocytic thyroiditis after giving birth to the baby. Additionally, some researchers have found that the presence of these antibodies makes a pregnant woman three times more likely to acquire postpartum depression. This thyroid issue following maternity can be short-term, lasting for up to six months to a year. However, about one in five of women will acquire long term hypothyroidism that needs lifetime hormone remedy. The reason being the thyroid glands were too impaired as a result of hormonal imbalance or because the maternity set off an underlying condition of autoimmune disease.

Chronis tonsil stones are not a serious matter if you monitor them, but it can also lead to other effects when left unchecked. These stones can result in halitosis, pain in the mouth and throat, difficulty swallowing, choking, a metallic taste, and coughing fits.

Many dentists are not sure why some people are more prone to chronic tonsil stones. Stones form in the many opening and pockets in the mouth, so it can also be common to a lot of people.

However, getting away from chronic tonsil stones is important to protect your throat and mouth, and of course halitosis is no laughing matter. So how to deal with this situation?

This complication can develop with the unchecked accumulation of mucus and bacteria. If these are not washed away correctly, they can develop into mouth stones.. It’s obvious then why good oral hygiene is so necessary. One needs to observe proper oral hygiene to decrease the chance of build-up in gums and teeth.

Rinsing regularly with mouthwash may also cut down on chronic tonsil stones. Mouthwash and mouth rinses will get those elements that are difficult to reach with a toothbrush or floss. It is critical to get this down so as to minimize the occurrence of chronic tonsil stones.

A regular check-up with your dentist is important if you have chronic tonsil stones before. He can look at your throat and mouth to look for stones.. If these stones are cleaned quickly, there will be less chance for them to become a problem.

A dentist can also help you to address the symptoms of chronic tonsil stones such as making sure you’re flossing regularly and properly. A dentist may also be able to prescribe a type of mouthwash that will help to cut down on bacteria and the buildup of germs and mucus in the mouth. For some people, these holes or pockets in the mouth needs to be closed and fixed up to prevent the formation of cavities which can be a hotbed for stones.

In addition, chronic tonsil stones can have similar symptoms with other mouth problems so it is important to have them checked out. Although these stones have minimal effect and can be only mildly irritating, it is always prudent to have these things checked by your dentist in case what you are having could be more severe.

You may think you are ready to breast feed. You may think you want to breast feed. Are you really. Be sure to consider the following preparatory steps to take.

Be sure you really want to breast feed. Do not lie to yourself. If you have any doubts at all, it can effect the enjoyment of the event. It may also negatively impact upon the frequency in feeding and your ability to produce milk.

You need to commit yourself to breast feeding. You cannot enter it in a half hearted matter. Once you decide to breast feed, be sure you approach it in a positive and reaffirming manner.

Be aware that not everybody will approve of your decision. In public and private some individuals do not see breast feeding in the same light that you do. Are you able to handle and shrug off the criticism?

Are you flexible and patient? Breast feeding can be demanding. It requires adjustments on your behalf. Your time may not be your own. Can you adapt to the changes in your schedule. Your hours, let alone your days, weeks and months, are no longer your own.

Be sure you have your partner behind you. You do not need any flack from your nearest and dearest. You need both their support and encouragement. Talk to him or her about your decision both before and after your decision. Discuss the pros and cons as well as why you prefer to breast feed over the alternatives. Accept his opinion and discuss it honestly. Remember it is not only your life that breast feeding may effect.

When you choose your doctor, midwife or other practitioner, be aware of their own prejudices and opinions. Try to opt for someone who is well-qualified and does not denigrate your decision. The professionals do not have to agree with your stance, but the advice they give you on all matters should be helpful and respectful. They should not ignore your choice or press their preference upon you. At the same time, you must listen to any justifiable objections they offer.

Surround yourself with friends and family members who are breast feeding positive. If they do not approve, and many will not, at least have them to agree to disagree and leave it at that.

Take the time to look around for various support groups. If you are a single mother, they may help you maintain your composure and sanity during the difficult times. If you are in a relationship, it is still good to have someone who understand you and your situation. Talk with your friends about possible groups and associations they found or find helpful. See if your area has some type of breast feeding support group. Look for a local lactation consultant. Talk to other new parents.

While you cannot actually practice breast feeding, you can make some preparation for the event. Take advantage of the time before you give birth to learn more about your body. Make a list of what you can do prior to the event. Do explore the possibilities of what you can do before your newborn arrives. It will help to make the experience more pleasurable for all the parties involved.

A breast pump allows you to spend some time away from your baby while still providing him or her with your breast milk.

There are a variety of breast pumps from which to choose. You can pick an electric pump, a hand operated version or a foot model. It is a personal choice. Whatever works for you.

Breast Feeding Equipment – Bottles

Breast Facts #1

It is essential to realize that during the process of not only pregnancy but for preparation for breast feeding, your breasts undergo a change. It is essential you understand the alterations. This will help you prepare for the process of breast feeding. It will make it much easier to go with the flow – of milk.

During your pregnancy, your breasts begin to alter to reflect their upcoming purpose. During the first trimester, the breasts become tender. This is particularly true of the nipples. During the second trimester, the nipples become larger as does the areola. The pigmentation around the nipples is a darkening.

Breast Facts #2

The breasts do become larger. They are moving towards the time when they will engorge with milk. This begins to take place a few days after the birth of your child. You can easily recognize primary engorgement (Do not confuse with problem engorgment which is a common trouble associated with breast feeding.). Your breasts will be painful to touch. They will feel hard. They may also become quite hot to the touch. They may be sore for from 24 to 36 hours during this initial period.

Breast Facts #3

The milk making process of your breasts is the result of the release of prolactin. From the first 12 months of conception onwards, it helps to increase breast size and helps you to produce a small amount of another essential ingredient – colostrum. Fortunately, the high levels of progesterone in your blood system ensure the milk production in your breasts remains minuscule until the arrival or your infant.

Breast Facts #4

After the delivery of your child and the expelling of the placenta, your body seriously settles down to produce milk for your baby. Yet, before you can provide your body with mother’s milk, your body initiates the first baby food – colostrum. Colostrum is the quintessential baby formula. It is a thick substance. It can be yellow, orange or clear in color. It appears after birth and remains the main nourishment until your breast begin to produce milk some 48 hours or more after birth. For the first 2 to 3 days, however, your baby will rely on colostrum for all its needs.

Breast Facts #5

Colostrum is a truly incredible substance. It serves several purposes at once. First, it is a complete nutrient package for your infant. It contains all the basic nutrients. Colostrum is higher in protein and lower in fat and carbohydrates than your mature milk. As a result, your baby requires very little to survive during these early days of breast feeding. Second, it is an immune inducing meal. Colostrum helps your baby maintain its defense against bacteria and other possible problems. This is because it is high in whey proteins (antibodies). Third, colostrum coats the baby’s stomach. In doing so it prevents the occurrence of bacterial infections. It helps pave the way for the baby’s stomach to handle the upcoming mature milk. Finally, colostrum acts as a laxative. It stimulates the newborn’s bodily excretion processes.

Breast Facts #6

Yet, both the release of colostrum and mature milk rely on one motion to maintain it – the sucking or latching of your baby on your breast. Once your baby begins to suck, several physical interrelated things occur. The initial sucking stimulates numerous nerves beneath the areola. These send a message conducted by the hormone prolactin to the brain. The brain, in turn, activates the release of both prolactin and oxytocin into the blood stream. They flow straight to the breast. Of these 2 hormones, prolactin and oxytocin, it is oxytocin who helps release the milk.

Breast Facts #7

Oxytocin is responsible for the ejection or let-down reflex of the minuscule milk sacs. The sacs are the production mechanism of the milk. Oxytocin releases the milk, sending it into the sinuses of the breast. The sinuses reside just beneath the breast’s areola. The first milk the baby initiates when the baby latches is the fore milk. As the milk drains, the hind milk flows. This mature milk is higher in lactose, fat and casein proteins than colostrum. At this point of your baby’s development, your breast milk is the ideal food for your baby.

Breast Facts #8

The process of making and releasing milk is a continuous one – a never ending loop, as long as the infant continues to suck. It is the sucking motion that re-triggers the oxytocin. In other words, the latching continually stimulates the oxytocin to continually produce milk. As long as you allow the baby to suck regularly and frequently, you will have the oxytocin acting to provide your breasts with a sufficient supply of milk for your infant. The secret, therefore, to a well-fed baby lies in ensuring the oxytocin receives continual stimulation. You may also want to note that the stimulation of the breast is also responsible for the release of endorphins. These do not stimulate the baby but do induce in mothers a happy or contented feeling while they breast feed.

Breast Facts #9

One issue for breast feeding moms is breast size. Size does not matter in how apt or capable you are at feeding your baby. Although breasts do grow in size when you are pregnant, larger does not mean better. Large or small, they are more than able to produce milk for your newborn. What matters more than size of breasts is the shape and performance of the nipple.

Breast Facts #10

Nipples come in all types. If you stimulate them, they will perk up and reveal their true nature or shape. Most breast nipples, when pinched will “pop” out. The nipple will become erect. This is a desirable quality for breast feeding. Other nipples may create problems. In order to determine whether your nipple may require more attention than others, grasp it in your hand and pinch it. The average breast will produce a protruded nipple. Even if you have flat nipples, a pinch may push them outwards. The same applies to the treatment of dimpled, folded or inverted nipples. Even in inverted nipples you can coax the nipple outwards. This creates a nipple for latching.

Breast Facts #11

If your nipples are flat, dimpled or inverted and do not pop out when you pinch, this is a cause for concern. If the nipple flattens or inverts further, you should talk to a doctor about correcting the problem. If the nipple extends out only slightly, you may also have to consider talking to your doctor or professional. A baby need to latch if she or he is to successfully feed and thrive on breast milk.

Breast Facts #12

Breast changes also continue throughout breast feeding. The nipples may stretch. The size may seem to vary. What does this all mean when you decide to stop breast feeding your child? Normally, there is little to concern yourself about. The breasts may remain larger for a while. You may even be able to express milk for several weeks or even months. By the end of 6 months after weaning, your breasts may seem somewhat smaller if firmer than before your pregnancy. At the end of a year the build-up of fat will help you to regain an approximation of their previous shape and size.

These are medicines that relieve constipation. Ideally, you should avoid laxatives during pregnancy and try to control constipation:

By increasing the intake of natural fibres in the form of fruits and vegetables and fluids, especially water.

By exercising regularly, for eg, walking.

In case laxatives are an absolute necessity, bulk laxatives are recommended. They increase the bulk of the stools by absorbing water and make the stools softer. These include methylcellulose, psyllium and polycarbophil.

Stimulant laxatives such as castor oil, bisacodyl, senna and phenolphthalein increase the movement of the intestinal muscles. They are not known to harm the baby but can cause severe cramps in the abdomen. This is why they are used with caution.

Lubricants contain mineral oil that help the stools move smoothly in the intestines. They cause vitamin deficiencies and are therefore not recommended during pregnancy.

Saline laxatives absorb water into the intestine and increase stool volume. They are recommended only if immediate evacuation of stools is necessary. They are avoided if you have high blood pressure.
